Steadfast was commissioned by Heather Mensch and the Tyler Junior College Trombone Choir. It was composed for 8-part trombone ensemble and was premiered at TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) on February 13, 2020.
Can you think of someone for whom you are thankful? Picture in your mind someone who has been good to you, who has shown you kindness and love. This might be a parent, a mentor, or a best friend – someone who has stood by you when you were struggling. This piece celebrates goodness, reflects on distressing times, and shouts thankfulness for a steadfast love.
During the composition process, I was moved by a poem of thankfulness found in the Old Testament of the Bible:
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!
Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!
(Psalm 118:1,5,29 ESV)
I hope this piece will inspire listeners and performers alike to thankfully celebrate those people who have shown us this kind of steadfast love.
