“Fantasy on a German Folksong” is based on the German folksong “Der Mond ist aufgegangen.” The song begins with an image of the moon rising at day’s end. It concludes with the moon rising at life’s end. The piece is written at a Grade 4 level.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Donaueschingen Band Music Concert, the Baden-Württemberg Band Music Association (BVBW) called for a composition competition and commissioned the Baden-Württemberg State Wind Orchestra (LBO) to organize it. Based on the idea from 1926, the aim was to create works for German wind music that draw on German folk songs, folklore, and musical tradition. “Fantasy” was written for this occasion and is dedicated to music director Björn Bus and the musicians of the LBO, whose breathtaking technique and passionate musicianship inspire me as a composer and as a member of the tuba section.
